How we handle our money is a habit.  That’s why someone who changes jobs or careers and finds themselves with substantially more money still finds themselves living beyond their means.  That’s why someone who wins the lottery and quits his job, finds himself back at work within a few years.  It’s not that we are in the habit of spending a certain amount of money or having a certain lifestyle, it’s that we are in the habit of being stretched financially.  We have a vision of ourselves as people who have a hard time making ends meet.  Our habits are a direct result of the vision we hold of who we are.  Our beliefs about ourselves and our place in the world are by far our most limiting characteristic.

If you have money woes related to spending and saving, then you see yourself as someone with money woes related to spending and saving.  You probably think this is your “lot” in life.  Destiny has cursed you with this burden.  That’s not true.  You can change all that in a heartbeat.  How, you ask?  Here are a few tips that may help point you in the right direction.

Surprisingly few people know. Here’s a typical conversation.

“How much do you spend each month?”

“All of it.”

“Where does the money go?”

“I have no idea.”

Use the Current Cash Flow Statement to guide you.  Add categories as needed to make it yours.
